Paraquat Class Action Lawsuits

Since 2009, various reports have been published linking Paraquat herbicide exposure to the development of Parkinson’s disease. The research shows that this herbicide chemical is highly toxic and has dangerous side effects on the human body. One such study even found that those exposed to Paraquat had a 200 – 600% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s.

The widespread use of Paraquat by commercial farmers has affected agriculture laborers, residents living near industrials farms, and others involved in the production and transportation of the herbicide. Many of these victims have developed Parkinson’s as a result of exposure to this toxic chemical. Lawsuits have begun which seek to find justice for the victims, many claiming a failure to adequately research and warn consumers about Paraquat risks, failure to adequately ensure protection for Arkansas workers against Paraquat side effects, and negligence and misrepresentation regarding the risks of Paraquat.

Paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease

Paraquat herbicide is highly toxic, and ingesting, breathing, or otherwise coming into contact with Paraquat has been found to cause problematic physical and neurological side effects.  Studies have found that the severe damage caused by exposure includes Parkinson’s disease. Below is a timeline of the research linking Paraquat to Parkinson’s:

2009 – American Journal of Epidemiology published findings suggest exposure to Paraquat within 550 yards of a home increases the Parkinson’s disease risk by 75%.
2011 – Environmental Health Perspectives published that Parkinson’s disease was “positively associated” with Paraquat exposure.
2011 – NIH FAME study published farmers using Paraquat are 2 1/2 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s.
2012 – Genetic Modification Association of Paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease published that individuals with certain genetic variation are 11 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s.
2016, March – EPA announced they would be exploring health risks with Paraquat.
2016, December – Nature Chemical Biology published that Paraquat kills cells through a mechanism called oxidative stress, which is linked to Parkinson’s disease.
2017 – The Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council urged the EPA to end the use of Paraquat because of its connection to Parkinson’s disease.

Studies are still ongoing to determine the full extent of damages and injuries that can be caused by Paraquat exposure, such as Parkinson’s disease.
