Fisher-Price recalled over 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play sleepers after it was linked to 32 infant deaths over 10 years. The company is advising that consumers stop using any model of the Rock ‘n Play sleeper immediately.

The Rock ‘n Play has been on the market since 2009, and has been one of the most popular baby products since. The sleeper reclines, rocks, vibrates and plays music and helps babies fall asleep. The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Kyle Yasuda, said in a news release, “When parents purchase a product for their baby or child, many assume that if it’s being sold in a store, it must be safe to use. Tragically, that is not the case.”
According to the AAP, babies are supposed to sleep safely on their backs on firm, flat surfaces that don’t move, without pillows or blankets. The reclining position of the sleeper and its pillow headrests and toys put babies at risk of compromised airways, limited breathing and suffocation. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission linked the Rock ‘n Play to 32 infant deaths – several cases in which babies died due to asphyxia. These fatalities occurred after infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side in the sleeper while unrestrained.
Fisher-Price issued a safety warning about the product prior to the recall—but the AAP argued that the continued availability put infants at too high of a risk and that the issued notice was not a strong enough warning.
About two weeks after the Rock ‘n Play was recalled, two class action lawsuits were filed against Fisher-Price and its parent brand, Mattel. The lawsuit states: “This recall was too late to save the lives of more than 30 infants and to prevent the injuries of numerous other infants caused by the Rock ‘n Play.”
